Bukit Kayu Hitam, Malaysia

This new immigration check point complex at Bukit Kayu Hitam on the Malaysian side going through Sadao Thailand on the other side is opened since April 2019 which serves those travelling by land between these 2 neighboring countries. Check point is open from 6am Malaysian time daily till 10pm . Facility is new but not quite user friendly as there are no self checkout automated counters like previously and this actually caused unnecessary long queues especially during peak holidays and weekends. Toilets are located on the other side of the building and this makes it more inconvenient especially for those with disabilities. A badly designed and not user friendly facility.

Out of the so many land border checkpoints I've been to in Asia, this is one of the simplest and neatest checkpoints. Not much facilities, only car or pedestrian immigration traffic. I was on a coach from KL to Hat Yai. All you do is queue up with your passport and have your fingerprints taken electronically (foreigners only) by the immigration officer, \Chop\ , get back on the bus and off you go to Sadao Checkpoint on the Thai side.
The review is on the Thailand border exit 1st. The system improved better than last time. But it hard to avoid people panic what to do whether do queue in the building with the bus user or proceed the drive through counter. It's more conflicting when the counter easily closed with no notifications. From 3 lanes to 2 lanes. What a maniac. Everybody get mad. If you're driving a car queue in the car lane. Once reach the counter, all passengers get outside for passport checking. After that, get in the car proceed next with custom counter. Get your custom declaration form checked and you and leave Thailand safely
The new counter separates the buses, van, and normal passenger cars so we can pass faster, Malaysia border checking is smoother than Sadao custom checking. Driver and passengers did not required to leave the car to proceed. Good job to Malaysia custom improvement.
Nice place
When there are more buses and vans than cars, officers need to take necessary actions to avoid long queue. Long line of buses and vans, long line of people inside and outside of the building during peak season. Officers need to be aware and ready to act when tourists start to fill the small hall. Washroom is closer to the entry side. If after over an hour of queuing and coming out thru the exit door and you need to go to the washroom, you will have to walk back towards the entry from the outside of the building. washroom is pretty clean.
Well maintained customs and immigration of Malaysia through roadways. Quick and clear process.
Efficient, no nonsense immigration experience. Much better than those corrupt characters across the border
