Nice place for hiking!
Amazing that they have been able to build a staircase all the way from the foot till summit. Absolute must do. Stairs will be slippery due to foilage after rain but other than that pretty safe. Tip for the lazy, go with grab up gunung raya, enjoy the view and then go down the stairs starting from langkawi viewing point. Tlthen take a bath in the river at the foot of the mountain :) Mind the bloodsucking leeches though! It may depend on the time of year (we got 5 leeches in May). They are harmless, but once latched it can be bit hard to flick them off once latched while the bleeding continues for some time too due to the hirudin they inject _ Proper closed shoes are recommended.
Did the hike in a gloomy morning, and it rained heavily while we’re there. The hike up to Gunung Raya isn’t for amateurs, even though it’s all stairs that will eventually lead to the summit. The stairway is heavily forested in some parts and with all that falling of branches and tree trunks some areas especially closer to the end point are blocked. You will need to leave the stairs and duck through thick bushes to continue on the trek. Nobody manages the trail ever since MCO (I believe), resulting in a poor and sometimes dangerous experience for us. The stairs are very high and steep in certain parts as well, never take this as a grain of salt people! We made it to the top after more than two hours of hiking, the view should be spectacular with islands spreading across the horizon. Unfortunately that was not what we saw as it rained very heavily during our time there. Be sure to be prepared to hike back down as it’s hard to hail a taxi or Grab from there. Felt like walking endless stairs. But it was a great experience. There is a mini little tiny waterfall at the entrance where you can relax after your return journey. Toilet is available. You will see a red signboard which says route is close but you can ignore it. There are trees blocking but you can walk around it. Route is shaded so can go anytime of the day, just make sure you bring sufficient water :)
we went during unsettled weather - beautiful but also haunting as you feel as if your are the only ones walking up a relentless , never ending staircase. DO wear proper footwear, long trousers - DON'T wear sandals. Leeches will appear halfway up and literally throw themselves at your feet. (we learnt the hard way) Bring enough water as well as its a very very long walk. There is nothing at the top. a power station which you could get shot for trespassing and an abandoned hotel... so lucky that a good Samaritan gave us a ride back (until we discovered leeches had also hitched a ride up his trousers)...
Not for the faint hearted. This hike up over 4,000 stairs can be tiring and daunting. I am in my 60s and made it to 2450 ish. Had to come back down. Know your limits. The stairs are not maintained and parts have collapsed or have large tree obstacles making you walk round. The sign said it would take 2 hours 15 minutes to reach the top, which is about right if you're fit enough.
4200 steps to arrive the top of the gunung raya. Nice thing to do on Langkawi. You have to prepare yourself with enough drinkingwater and abgood mosquitoprotection, also on your feed and legs because of the leeches on the way up.
