Imagine a family of cave men, sitting in their cave shelter after their catch for their meal. The sun has not yet set over their shelters. One or two of them decide to while away their time by drawing. In 1959 Lt. RL Rawlings, a British army officer with the 2nd Battalion of the 6th QEO Gurkha Riffles while on routine training exercise discovered Tambun Cave paintings. They were mostly mostly painted using hematite. Measuring 24.38m wide and 8.13m high, they are South-East Asia's largest hematite Neolithic rock art and believed to be the only drawing of their kind in Malaysia.

Would have given 5 stars but the place was not well maintained. Went there yesterday 26 sept 2020 around 3pm. Weather was nice, cloudy without heavy rain. I was with my family of 5, 3 kids age 5,9 & 11. We drove through a housing area & parked right at the entrance to the cave. The entrance wasn't that obvious. Many mistaken with the yellow gate on left is the entrance (that's a private property btw). We walked through a bushy path along a stream & field on the right for almost 15mins. Then you will find a hut on the left with stairs heading to the cave painting. The climb to the top takes about 1minutes only. It was a very steep stairs so have to be very careful. Once you reach the top, the view was magnificient. Who knew that this place was once a house to cavemen. Perak state should really look after this place & maintain regularly so many visitors can easily access to the place.hi
Good place to explore, let look at it before dissapear.
A bit tedious to locate, some part of the stairs were cover by shrubs. But you do get to see horse freely grazing.
has ancient drawings that can't be found elsewhere.. but lack sign board
Path need to be cleared. Brings back memories of more than 40 years
The gate entrance into the cave is heavily bushed?? Or is it closed during MCO? But no notice too. Quite eerie at first because need to park outside behind Caltex and walk through random polo park. Then saw foot path, follow through it mysteriously. Then saw the gate was like never touched for a year? I dunno...scary but you go la then you tell me whether it is still open or not this cave..i just want to see the old painting
Wall paintings themselvesare quite interesting to see, especially due to their age. Unfortunately the site is not very well maintained. It's difficult to find as it is hidden behind an army base. The path to the paintings leads from the gas station and through a polo field, which it's extremely wet and muddy after any rain, which is daily in Ipoh! The steps up to the paintings have many many mosquitos during the day that are waiting to feast on you, so be prepared! Not really worth it..
