Best place to get a good view of proboscis monkey. Best to visit during feeding hour.

Just a few minutes walk along a raised wooden walkway and you come out at a large pavilion surrounded by some viewing platforms for the monkeys. But if you get there when there are hardly any other people around like we did the monkeys will run right by you into the pavilion and sit around on the hand rails, they’re quite approachable and aren’t bothered if you try to get within a couple of feet of them.
I was frustrated that communication via email was not easy. But the bus driver was nice man. He gave me information what I wanted to know which I couldn't get that from email. The website needs update. The staff don't care about neither monkeys and tourists. yes, for sure you can see monkeys, but their home had destroyed. They are not wild animal anymore... more like pets in ''wild''.
I was a bit sceptical visiting this place after reading some of the bad reviews. But it was not a disappointing one. A good place for a close encounter. The monkeys are free to roam. There were many infants. This place has been operational for almost 20years. Yes, most of their natural habitats have been destroyed due to deforestation but if they do not feed these monkeys, they might go extinct. That’s the price we pay to become a developed country. If you prefer to see proboscis monkeys in their natural habitats, do a river cruise with sights of fireflies but don’t forget to bring binoculars to see the monkeys.
The monkeys roam freely and you can watch the monkeys up close, be careful not to touch them though... They're still considered wild even though used to human interaction..
They are amazing creatures. I was so excited to see them. But I'm very sad to realise that palms plantation kill their habitat.
Here you can see very close Proboscis monkey, Silver leaf langur monkey, Hornbill bird. Just 30 min drive from Sandakan town.
Off the beaten track and worth seeking out. We tried to book on a Sunday but got no reply but headed there anyway on the Monday. As it is part of a commercial oil palm area then I was grateful to see some wildlife. There were lots of proboscis monkeys at the first location and they showed no interest in the few visitors there. flying around were a pair of hornbills. At the second location the silver leaf monkeys invaded. I have seen these elsewhere and they do come close, this was repeated here. It seems some education is required for staff and the overall organisation but a welcome change from monotonous oil palm plantations. It also has some of the best toilets I have seen in Malaysia!
