Kuala Rompin, Malaysia

A beautiful dam located just 15 minutes from Rompin Town. Fishing is unofficially allowed but I would recommend using a local guide as the dam is filled with under water tree stumps which will likely puncture a hole in any normal fiberglass dinghy. Toman (Giant Snakeheads) are common in this dam. However, there are also Sebarau (Jungle Perch) in abundance but they are more difficult to catch as they do not show themselves like the giant Snakeheads. Fishing equipment is strictly Heavy Cover style here. Rods which can withstand around 30lbs and reels with at least 5 kilos of drag and extra strong hooks is recommended here as one needs to put maximum pressure on the fish in order to prevent it from getting snagged in the submerged tree trunks or weeds. The guides charge from RM350 for a day's fishing. There is a floating boathouse anchored in the middle of the dam where one can go and get some rest or to answer nature's call. 6 to 8 inch Weedless soft plastic lures are recommended here. There are some areas where it is sufficiently clear enough to chuck a shallow minnow such as an Imakatsu Reprizer which is highly effective. Soft frogs, Jump frogs and buzz baits are also recommended but in my opinion not as effective as the Soft Plastic weedless lures and Shallow minnows. Overall, one of the best places to hunt for Giant Snakeheads in Malaysia but it is also one of the most challenging places to land one.
