Steam train travel back to old time

I had a very wonderful experience during I ride this train. I can says back to 80's or 90's time. Where by most of the European use this train as transportation. The environment inside the train was cosy and calm. The train was clean and smelled nicely. The staff also very friendly and polite to their customer. Their also provide a good food. I try their Sabahan famous cakes called panjaram and drink with tea as breakfast. Was very nice and soft to eat. I prefer more to try their tradition cakes other than the usual food such as bread and more. The ticket price still affordable. Every time their stop at railway station. The technicion staff will checked the condition of the railway. So, the people inside will be more safe from danger. Beside, most of the people who visited that placed was very friendly and like to talk each other. I really comfortable with them. Futhermore, when the train stop at other station. You can spend your time to go shopping to nearest market. To prevent a wasting time. So, I recommend all of you to visit Sabah and try ride this train.

Pros: fun train ride, nice stops to see local markets etc. Cons: DELAYS. Make sure you have nothing booked in the afternoon. Itenerary states back at 1:40pm. Today we arrived back at the station at 5:00pm. Arrange at your own risk. Overall - good trip but delay of 3 hours not worth my day.

Take a ride on the historic North Borneo Railway I enjoyed my day trip on the NBR as it made its way southwest toward Papar Town. The train has been historically refurbished to its former glory - a beautiful wood stove powered engine, and classic interior passenger compartments. The staff also dress in uniforms from the glory days era. The train ride itself goes through a few different villages (some more interesting than others), and while the views may not be spectacular, just being on the train itself is what made it worth it. Food on board is tasty and comes in good portions. Vegetarians should request for the vegetarian option (request this in advance when making your booking!). Staff are extremely hospitable and friendly (especially to any kids on board). This is a great ride for a family to take. But even as a solo traveler, I enjoyed my trip. Remember to book in advance as this train only runs 2 times a week and fills up quickly. It may be helpful to note that this train is purely for sightseeing and is not meant for traditional travel from point A to point B. It goes from and comes back to the same station. Note: this location on Google Maps is just the ticket office within Sutera Harbour resort, NOT the actual location of the train!

Whilst it is a fascinating train ride experience, the waiting time is totally unpleasant and not acceptable. The itinerary indicated that arrival back to Tg Aru station is 1:40pm. It is 4:45pm and we are still in the train. If a half an hour delay is still acceptable. The train operator is well aware that the engine needs time to boost up before continue journey, has highchance if breaking down along the way etc. Though passengers were informed prior to departure not to have flight arranged on same day, it is still helpful to indicate the reasonable time of arrival. In addition, it would enhance the experience even more if more activities can be included during the waiting time to enrich passengers experience especially on return journey, some old time crafts, some interesting souvenir stalls at intermediate stations so passengers can mingle about etc.

The outbound journey was ok with one 12 minute stop to build up steam (well they said it would be 12 minutes but it was actually 30 minutes). The 20 minute stop in Kinarut was 45 minutes, I realise now that was to steam up again. The itinerary said we would return at 1:40, but we did not reach the Papar Town station until 12:40 and were told to disembark for 1 hour (not 35 minutes). Lunch was ok, but cannot make up for an incredibly frustrating trip going back. We only got 20 minutes from Papar Town before we stopped for 45 minutes to re-steam, then an unscheduled stop 15 minutes later at Kinarut Station for 1 hour without any update from the crew. Didn't get back into Tanjung Aru until 5:15pm over three and a half hours late. Appalling, we wish we had grabbed a taxi in Papar.
