Located on the Kahang Plantation is this palm oil milling factory, where the freshly harvested bunches of oil palm fruits are sent for processing and extraction of palm oil. The fruits need to be processed as soon as they are harvested to avoid quality deterioration. The oil palm produces two types of oils, firstly, the Crude Palm Oil (CPO), which comes from the fibrous mesocarp, and secondly, the Crude Palm Kernel Oil (CPKO), which comes from the kernels. Although both oils originate from the same fruit, crude palm oil (CPO) differs from the palm kernel oil (CPKO), both chemically and nutritionally. Crude palm oil is one of the only two mesocarp oils available commercially, the other mesocarp oil being olive oil. At the milling factory, the fresh fruit bunch are sterilised and the fruits are stripped off. The loose fruits are then further processed and sent to a 'cold-press' machine to extract the CPO. The kernels are separated from the fibrous mesocarp in the press cake and are later sent to undergo further process in order to obtain the CPKO.
