Ferry is the best and cheapest way to travel between George Town and Butterworth. Taxi is also good but it's much more expensive and needs to travel much longer distance (because the bridge connecting Butterworth to the Penang Island is a lot south of Butterworth and George Town) The ferry terminal on Butterworth side is called Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal. It's next to the main transportation hub of Butterworth consisting of its bus terminal and train station. With bus and train you can get to and from Kuala Lumpur and other parts of Malaysia. Ferry terminal on the Penang Island side is called Pangkalan Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal. It's a 10-20 minute walk to the center of George Town. Ferries depart roughly twice per hour between 5:20 and 0:10 (10 minutes past midnight) from Butterworth. Return ferries depart between 5:40 and 0:40 (40 minutes past midnight) from George Town. Fare is 1.2 Ringgit, or about 30 cents USD, per passenger. If you have need to transport your bike or car it will cost extra. Trip takes about 20 minutes Taxi fare to get to George Town from Butterworth is 30-40RM, or 7.5-10 US. Trip takes about 40-60 minutes, depending on traffic. In Penang the best way to get taxi is by Grab app, which is a taxi hailing app like Uber (Uber actually sold its Malaysian operation to Grab).

Its the Farewell last Penang Ferry experience, was sad it was last...
This is an alternative transportation through the sea when we wanna go from Penang Islands to Butterworth in mainland or viceversa. We could take the ferry from this terminal frequently about 15-20 minutes. We could get free tickets if we go from Penang to Butterworth unless you want to go back from Butterworth (the tickets is below 2 RM). We would be directed to Penang Sentral Mall after coming down from ferry's terminal precisely. When in journey, the view was very nice especially if we took this ferry at sunset time. We could see Penang Bridge clearly across the sea.
Feeling nostalgic when taking the ferry ride again after a long while. It still looked the same, the ride still felt the same. This ferry service between Penang and Butterworth has long history; it was operational since 1894 !!
It's very easy to go to Butterworth from here. Usually the price is around 2.4 Ringgit, but when I get there on October, it was free. The departure time was really on-time.
Nice view and old ferry, estimate to clear queue around 45 minutes when I queue around 5:30pm, ferry travel time is 30 minutes. Very nice transport.
Ticket is free from Penang to Butterworth. Short and nice trip.
